What is an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm?

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a swelling or bulge in the aorta, the main blood vessel that carries blood from your heart through your body.

Most aneurysms do not cause any symptoms, but if an aneurysm becomes large, there is a risk that it could burst. Finding an AAA early means it can be monitored and treated if necessary.

Are you eligible for AAA screening?

Men aged 65 and over are at the greatest risk of developing an AAA.

In England, men are normally invited for NHS AAA screening during the year they turn 65.

Aged 65+ and haven’t been screened?

If you are male, aged 65 or over and have not previously been screened, you can contact the local AAA Screening Programme to arrange a free NHS screening examination.

What happens at an AAA screening?

Screening is a quick and painless ultrasound scan of your abdomen.

You’ll be asked to lie down and lift or unbutton your top. A small amount of gel is placed on your abdomen and an ultrasound probe is moved over the skin to measure the width of your aorta.

The appointment usually takes around 10–15 minutes, and you’ll normally be told your result at the appointment.

Your screening result

Most people who are screened will have a normal result and will not need any further screening.

If an aneurysm is found, what happens next will depend on its size. You may be offered regular ultrasound scans to monitor it or, for a larger aneurysm, be referred to a specialist to discuss treatment.

Who is more at risk?

The risk of developing an AAA increases with age and is higher in men. Other factors that can increase the risk include smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and having a close relative who has had an AAA.

Stopping smoking and looking after your blood pressure and general cardiovascular health can help reduce your risk.
